The Sleeper's Almanac: How Sleep Shapes Your Mental Health

The sleep and mood loop

Sleep and mental health are two-way: anxiety and low mood often disrupt sleep, and poor sleep makes anxiety and low mood worse. It can feel like a trap — but it also means improving sleep can help mood, and vice versa.

Realistic steps that help

You don't need a perfect sleep routine to see benefits. Small, consistent shifts are more powerful than dramatic overhauls.

  • Keep a consistent wake time, even on weekends
  • Wind down with a short, calming routine before bed
  • Reduce bright screens and caffeine in the hours before sleep
  • If you can't sleep, get up and do something calming until you feel drowsy
